Descrição do projeto

Shark biodiversity and conservation around the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, Brazil
01-01-2023
09-06-2023
Sharks have key ecological roles as top-predators, however, their populations are threatened by overfishing and habitat degradation worldwide. In the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha, a second shark attack on tourists earlier this year is forcing managers of a local marine protected area (MPA) to act. One option defended by local fishermen and stakeholders involved culling the sharks in order to ensure the safety of the tourists in the water around beaches, as it is done in many places around the world. After analyzing the biodiversity, abundance, and frequency of sharks around the archipelago, the goal of this research is to establish management recommendations to conciliate tourism and shark conservation.

The researchers who collected the data on which this study builds analyzed the stereo BRUV videos. The created excel files containing the data will be made available to me. In order to get familiar with the whole procedure of the research and also to double check the data in the excel file I will use a free tool to have a look at the videos of the stereo BRUVs. Then taxonomic keys will be used to identify the species of sharks around the archipelago. On top I will use R to do calculations and if necessary, tests.
The design of the management recommendations will be mostly done through communications with other researchers working on shark conservation in Brazil or other parts of the world with similar problems. On top, published literature will be used to present pros and cons of various options.
