Descrição do projeto

Relevant scales of variation of benthic assemblage s distribution on continental shelf Islands located along Southeastern Brazil Ecoregion.
13-06-2013
21-03-2014
The lack of studies about rocky shore benthic communities in Brazil is a matter of great concern, considering the urgent need for basic research regarding species distribution, in order to generate data for monitoring initiatives and impact assessments. Processes that define species distribution operate at different spatial scales. For this reason, a multi-scale approach is needed to evaluate ecological patterns. The present study seeks to evaluate the spatial patterns of distribution of subtidal rocky shore assemblages of islands in Strict Nature Reserves, on the coast of the state of São Paulo (Ecoregion 180 - Southeastern Brazil, Spalding et al, 2007). This will be achieved by two approaches. The first one is to assess the variability of the assemblages distribution on the islands and among themselves by hierarchical analysis of variance (ANOVA), in order to test the null hypothesis that spatial distribution does not change across 4 different scales, islands being the larger one, followed by sectors nested in islands, zones nested in sectors and by sites nested in zones. Non-metric multidimentional scaling ordinations (nMDS) on the basis of Bray-Curtis dissimilarities will also be performed. The second approach is planned in order to evaluate, on a local scale, the patterns of distribution of subtidal benthic assemblages in two islands (Island of Alcatrazes - SP and Island Anchieta - SP) due to different wave-exposure and substratum roughness by Non-metric multidimentional scaling ordinations on the basis of Bray-Curtis dissimilarities. For both approaches, sampling will be done in the summer of 2013 and in the subsequent winter.

Study location
The present study will take place in the Strict Nature Reserves Tupinambás and Tupiniquins. In the former, the sampling will be done in the Islands of Oratório, Sapata and Palmas and in Island of Queimada Pequena in the latter.
Study region and sampling design
Hierarchical analysis
Sampling will be a nested design and will take place the coast of the state of São Paulo, in the summer of 2013 and in the subsequent winter. In this region, 4 islands, separated by 10s of kilometers, will be randomly selected from a set of comparable islands, characterized by being in Conservation Units and by possessing at least 300 meters of wave-protected coast. In each island, two 100 meters length sectors will be randomly selected along the wave-protected shore, by dividing the shore in all possible 100m blocks and selecting 2 of them with the random numbers feature, from the Microsoft Excel software. In each sector, two 10 meters length zones will be randomly selected by the same way the sectors were in the islands. To make sure all the zones are comparable only flat rock zones will be sampled, what can alter, in the field, the coordinates of the zones due to substrate roughness. In case of a selected zone being in boulders, the nearest flat rock will be sampled and the new coordinates taken from a GPS. In each zone, two 2 meters length sites will be randomly selected and sampled from 1 to 5
