Descrição do projeto

Potencial of high-resolution hyperspectral data for identification of phytoplankton groups in inland and coastal waters
10-02-2025
31-12-2025
Water quality monitoring is essential in the context of a changing world; it is also a challenging task, especially in continental and water-rich countries such as Brazil. Remote sensing techniques have been developed, applied, and improved to detect and monitor optically active constituents of the water. Chlorophyll a is a crucial parameter when it comes to nutrient pollution, as it is a proxy of phytoplankton and the trophic state of water bodies; it has long been assessed through satellite data. However, due to the increase in algal and cyanobacterial blooms worldwide, identifying the composition of phytoplankton becomes a necessity for proper preservation and management of water quality. The launch of orbital hyperspectral sensors with high spatial resolution offers a unique opportunity to investigate phytoplankton groups from space. The spatial resolution of previous hyperspectral missions precluded inland water applications; therefore, remote sensing of phytoplankton groups in inland waters represents a global scientific gap. In view of that, this project aims to assess the potential of data from the Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP) and the Hyperspectral Precursor of the Application Mission (PRISMA) hyperspectral satellites to identify phytoplankton groups in Brazilian inland and coastal waters. We propose the assessment of Billings, Funil, and Promissão reservoirs, as well as the São Sebastião Channel, a coastal zone. The results of this project can indicate the feasibility of identifying phytoplankton groups in inland and coastal waters, as well as to support future studies focusing on the spatiotemporal dynamics of phytoplankton groups.

The acquisition of satellite images are required to the German Aerospace Center in the case of EnMAP satellite, while PRISMA images are required to the Italian Space Agency. The acquisitions are planned to occur concurrently with the field campaigns, so the satellite data can be subject to validation.

The field campaigns are aimed at measuring radiometric quantities, namely sky radiance, water-leaving radiance and incident solar irradiance. These quantities are used for calculating the remote sensing reflectance, which can be used to validate satellite data and atmospheric/glint correction algorithms. The measurements will be carried out using RAMSES spectroradiometers (TriOS Mess- und Datentechnik GmbH, Rastede, Germany).

At each sampling station, water samples will be collected. Part of samples will be used to perform absorption and attenuation measurements in the laboratory using a spectral absorption and attenuation sensor ac-s (WET Labs Inc., Philomath, USA). The other part of the samples will be send for taxonomic determination.
As saídas de campo ocorrerão entre janeiro e maio de 2025, compatibilizadas com a passagem dos satélites EnMAP e PRISMA. As etapas que serão seguidas na ocasião de cada saída de campo são descritas na sequência.

No dia anterior:
- Fixação dos espectrorradiômetros na embarcação do CEBIMar;
- Montagem do arranjo de medição de absorção em laboratório.

No dia da saída:
- Visita às estações de coleta previamente definidas;
- Medição utilizando os espectrorradiômetros;
- Coleta de amostras de água.

No dia seguinte:
- Análise de absorção das amostras em laboratório;
- Preparação das amostras de taxonomia para envio.
